The Mode GEO Jobs Index · baseline July 2026

Is generative engine optimisation
a real job yet?

AI created a new marketing discipline, and the surest sign a discipline is real is when companies start paying salaries for it. So Mode built the UK's first tracker of GEO as a hiring skill: how many live UK job listings name it, measured the same way every quarter. This page is the index. The baseline is July 2026, and the answer so far is: real, and early.

Why track this

Job ads are where hype goes to be audited.

Anyone can publish a think-piece about GEO. A job listing is different: it is a company committing budget to a skill, in public, with a salary attached. When we scanned live UK agency hiring in July 2026 we kept finding “generative engine optimisation” written into role requirements, which raised the obvious question: how much of this is real demand, and how much is noise? The only honest way to answer is to count, publish the count, and keep counting the same way.

The baseline says both things at once. GEO is genuinely in the labour market: 47 exact-phrase listings is not zero, and the sibling terms add more. And it is genuinely early: against 2,044 SEO listings, GEO sits at roughly 2% of the established discipline's hiring footprint. That ratio is the number to watch. When it triples, the land-grab has started, and this page will show it before the think-pieces do.

There is a precedent for how this goes. “Social media” entered job specs as a novelty, became a requirement, then became assumed. If GEO follows that curve, the businesses that made themselves readable and citable to AI systems early will have compounded a head start the late majority pays to catch up on. If it does not follow that curve, this index will honestly show that too, which is rather the point of publishing the misses along with the hits.

The wider market context sits in our State of the UK Agency Market research: agency headcount falling while budgets hold, routine production absorbed by AI, and new skills crystallising at the top of the stack. GEO in job ads is that last trend, caught in the act.

Method · so you can check it

Measured 13 July 2026. Counts are live UK job listings from the Adzuna job-search API using exact-phrase matching (“generative engine optimisation”, “answer engine optimisation”, “AI visibility”, and “SEO” as the denominator). Adzuna aggregates multiple UK job boards; counts are a point-in-time platform sample, not a census of every vacancy, and a phrase appearing in a listing does not always mean it is the job title. We corroborate single-keyword counts against a second job-board API where its search supports the query; exact-phrase counts are Adzuna-only because the second source does not support phrase matching, and we would rather publish one clean number than two incomparable ones. The index re-runs quarterly with the identical method. Corrections welcome at hello@modemarketing.ai.

Questions this answers

Is generative engine optimisation (GEO) a real job in the UK?

It is becoming one. In July 2026, 47 UK job listings named "generative engine optimisation" as an exact phrase, and 15 named "answer engine optimisation" (Adzuna job-search API, which aggregates multiple UK job boards). Companies are writing the skill into job specs, which is the labour market’s way of saying it believes the discipline is real. For context, plain SEO appeared in 2,044 listings, so GEO is at roughly 2% of SEO’s hiring footprint: real, and early.

How many GEO jobs are there in the UK right now?

The Mode GEO Jobs Index baseline (July 2026) counted 47 UK listings naming "generative engine optimisation", 15 naming "answer engine optimisation" and 55 mentioning "AI visibility", via exact-phrase search on the Adzuna API. These counts are a platform sample rather than the whole market, and a phrase appearing in a listing does not always mean it is the job title. The index is re-measured quarterly with the same method so the numbers stay comparable.

Is GEO replacing SEO jobs?

No. SEO appeared in 2,044 UK listings against GEO’s 47 in July 2026. GEO stacks on top of SEO rather than replacing it: AI assistants surface what search engines can already find and read, so the foundational skills remain the base. What the index tracks is whether GEO becomes a named requirement alongside SEO, the way "social media" once entered marketing job specs.

What is the Mode GEO Jobs Index and how often is it updated?

A quarterly measure of generative engine optimisation as a hiring skill in the UK: the number of live UK job listings naming the exact phrase, counted through the Adzuna job-search API, alongside the sibling terms and the SEO denominator. Mode publishes the method with every update so anyone can reproduce the numbers. Baseline: July 2026, index value 47.

Should a small business hire for GEO or buy it as a service?

At roughly 2% of SEO’s hiring footprint, GEO hiring is mostly happening inside agencies and larger in-house teams. For a small business, a fixed-price check of what AI systems currently see and say about you is usually the proportionate first step, before any hiring decision. Mode sells exactly that, with a published price and no sales call. Honest caveat: GEO improves the signals AI systems read; nobody can guarantee a citation.

The skill is entering job ads. Your visibility can't wait for a hire.

Mode tracks this market because we work in it: making businesses readable, verifiable and citable to the AI systems buyers now ask first. The AI Visibility Check is the proportionate first step · does AI mention you, can it read you, and the top three fixes, benchmarked against your three closest competitors.
